Juneteenth
Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas, and more generally the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans throughout the former Confederacy of the southern United States. Its name is a portmanteau of "June" and "nineteenth", the date of its celebration. Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in forty-five states. Today it is observed primarily in local celebrations.
This is what Wikipedia has on Juneteenth. It is very sterile in its teaching and discussion on the fact that on this day 2.5 years AFTER slavery actually ended, it ended in Texas. Why did it take 4 years to officially end? Well, I would say it's because the South wanted to keep slavery as long as possible. But I wonder, we are just a few generations out of slavery and past trauma lives in our DNA passed on from those past generations. Are we on a cellular level still suffering with the slave mindset? How are we living our lives now, how are we treating each other now in ways that are reminiscent of the slave mindset?
Juneteenth is supposed to be a celebration of liberation but are we?
Just something I wonder about.
